Luckily, the two concealed gun turrets didn’t manage to catch anyone flat-footed, and, despite Kyu taking a solid hit in the chest from one of the guns, the party managed to take them down quickly.
With the guns taken out, the security doors were the next challenge, and they did not slow the party down at all; a few seconds of work with the security panel quickly unlocked the doors. Assuming defensive positions, beforehand, the party opened the doors, expecting immediate attack from inside; what they got was silence; the doors opened to a dark and quiet hallway.
While Kabuki and Hikaru remained on overwatch, the expert door openers proceeded inside to the first air-lock style door. They rapidly cut open the first door, but it quickly became apparent why the doors were built in this fashion; some form of gas filled the hallway, and while their respirators helped, they did not stop it from entering their lungs. In addition, it also made their skin feel as if it were on fire.
The next 30 seconds were a rush of combat and desperate action; the head of the facility was staking cover within the room, and opened fire on the party, while the nasty gas slowly took them down, one by one. He resisted the first few attempts to force him to stand down, and even after he appeared to give up and turned off the gas, Hikaru was forced to kill him when he went for a concealed weapon under his lab coat.
With what turned out to be Karl Heinzfeld dead, the runners took a few minutes to rest while the gas cleared from the main hallway, and then proceeded to the back lab where the prototype was being worked on. Along the way, they found the facility’s servers slagged; some form of explosive charge had been detonated, destroying them.
Arriving at the lab the party was interrupted by the voice of the technician within the lab, Marie Kulchinski. In exchange for the party confirming the death (by showing her the severed head) of Karl Heinzfeld, she would let them have the prototype, and point out some other valuable tidbits that they could take. She also wanted the party to take her to a cybersurgeon; she had a cortical bomb in her head that she desperately wanted out.
The party quickly agreed, and made their way out of the lab before the security Marie indicated Heinzfeld would have called, arrived.
Luckily their haste was enough, and the party, with Marie in tow, managed to get out of the area and back to the Marubeni garage.
Jon, and his uncle (who was in fact backing the run) were very pleased, and provided a bonus for rescuing Marie.
